Many Cubans are hungry in Cuba. During the economic crisis of the 90s, the so-called “Special Period”, Cubans suffered a lot of hunger on the Island. There was even an epidemic of Neuropathy (The disease of hunger). Thousands of Cuban men and women died from this disease between 1990 and 1998, as well as thousands went blind due to Neuritis. Food shortages and poor nutrition have been constant due to the communist dictatorship. That is what this portrait represents.
